It’s not being a straight white guy that makes people dislike you

Special thanks to T. for hunting this down after I had never actually saved it.

Well, thanks for clarifying.

You can’t avoid seeing it if you’re online for a while.  The internet has provided space for a lot of people to pipe up and say things like “let’s not see a whole bunch more games starring stubbly white dudes,” and this is invariably followed by a whole lot of people whining in the comments.  “I can’t help being a straight white guy!  Why are you being so marginalizing to me?  Why do things have to change!  I’m sick of all this political correctness, why can’t we just focus on the games?  You shouldn’t hate me for being a straight white guy!”

Good news, guy!  Nobody hates you for that.  Well, not nobody, there are a couple people who probably do hate you for that, but I’m going to go ahead and say that’s not your primary problem here.  Most of the people who are writing these articles, and most of the people who are going to call you out for being a turd in the comment section, aren’t doing so because of some hatred of straight white guys.  You’re doing a lot of other things to make people dislike you.

Ruined forever?

Copyright information is on the linked page, and prepare for a lot of clicking around.

This is just plain good to have around anyway.

I love the Transformers wiki. Sure, that was kind of to be expected, seeing as I love Transformers in general (and I can indulge in that a bit more now, as I just realized both Beast Wars and Prime are available on Netflix in their entirety), but the wiki itself is a joy to read even aside from that. There’s a lot of great commentary on the pages, stuff that I find hilarious to read even outside of looking up specific bits of information.

There’s also a lot of good metacommentary on fandom as a whole, including the absolutely priceless and TVTropes-inspiring page on Ruined FOREVER.  You can’t help but run across that a few dozen times in basically any online fandom.  This latest change has ruined the franchise forever, and now we’re into the inevitable decline.  And while I love that idea, I have to wonder… has it ever happened?  Have we really ever seen a franchise that has been irrevocably ruined forever?  Or is jumping the shark as a concept kind of ridiculous?

Expanding beyond Titanfall’s server limitations

You're pitting my love of giant robots against my loathing of FPS games. That's not fair, people. Not fair at all.

A game about giant robots can now be played almost entirely with robots.

Last week, Titanfall set up what I think is a very fair penalty system.  If you are caught cheating, you are not banned, you’re simply banished to a server where everyone else is also a damn cheater.  So you will be more than able to enjoy the game, if what genuinely makes the game fun for you is playing amidst a field of cheating bastards.

Incidentally, that was the original title for Sting’s “Fields of Gold,” I believe.

I feel this is an excellent first step, but by no means the final one.  This is a brilliant concept that is almost infinitely expandable, allowing companies to ensure that players get to live with the people what will nurture and understand them.  Or at least understand them.  All right, that’s not really what I’m concerned about so much.  There are toxic and vile people on the internet who seem to enjoy spreading vile toxicity into the games that we love, and perhaps we could use this same methodology to deal with people best surrounded by one another in the hopes that they may realize “wow, I am extremely annoying.”

Get Over It

Remember me as I was. Swarmed with teddy bears.

There are no doubt many images that I could use to memorialize Star Wars Galaxies with more dignity. That’s kind of why I picked this one instead.

First of all, I want to state for the record that I am unexpectedly sad about the fact that Star Wars Galaxies is closing down.  In every respect, I can understand why the players of the game would be sad and unhappy with this turn of events.  I have nothing but sympathy for the feelings of those affected by this shutdown, because really, there’s no way to frame this as anything less than sucking.

That having been said?  It’s done.

Sony has told you guys that you are not going to win this.  There’s no question, there’s no last-ditch rally to save the beach from Evil Mr. Shutdownington or whatever.  Sony stepped up and said “guys, the petition thing, it’s sweet, but it is also totally pointless.”  And yet the desperate requests to spread the word continue, as if somehow if you just got enough signatures it would somehow alter the space-time continuum and the companies would change their minds.

Final Fantasy VII And The Great Big Undeserved Credit

Remember when this looked cutting-edge?

I wonder how many people have sat down and seriously thought about the fact that this image stops being relevant less than ten hours into the game.

So today I got just a little bit angry when I posted on Facebook.  Nothing wrong with that, exactly; it happens a lot.  Specifically, I said that anyone who claims that Final Fantasy VII is the best thing Square has produced over the past fourteen years is either an asshole or a liar.

I meant it, too.

And the thing is, as soon as I said it, I knew that there was more to say.  Because I didn’t say that FFVII is a bad game (it’s not), I didn’t say that it shouldn’t be your favorite game (I don’t care), I didn’t even say that it was the worst thing.  But after reading yet another comment about how Square peaked in 1997, something in me finally snapped.  I’ve been watching this happen around every subsequent Final Fantasy title after the polygonal lens-flare-festival that pioneered the concept of a multi-disc game on the PlayStation, and it’s gone from being mildly odd to being downright stupid.
